Emphasizing Safety During Poison Prevention Month
March is a time of renewal and growth, a perfect opportunity to celebrate the boundless curiosity of our youngest explorers. It’s also National Poison Prevention Month, a crucial period dedicated to fostering a safe environment where children’s curiosity can flourish without the shadow of potential dangers. Each year, thousands of children in the United States face medical emergencies due to accidental poisoning, highlighting the importance of vigilance among parents and pediatric home health staff. The home is a playground of discovery for children, who often learn by touching and tasting. While this is a vital part of development, it also brings them into close contact with everyday items that could be harmful if ingested, such as household cleaners, medications, and certain plants.
The Stark Reality of Pediatric Poisoning
The American Association of Poison Control Centers highlights a concerning trend, with over 2 million poisoning incidents reported each year, a significant portion of which involves children under the age of 6. Notably, household cleaners and medications frequently emerge as the culprits in these pediatric poisonings. The ability to recognize the early signs of poisoning is crucial for ensuring a positive outcome. These signs can vary widely, from nausea and vomiting to more severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, seizures, or even unconsciousness.
Emergency Preparedness
In a poisoning emergency, the initial response can significantly impact the outcome. It’s paramount to remain calm and avoid inducing vomiting unless directed by a healthcare professional. The Poison Help line (1-800-222- 1222) offers a lifeline, providing round-the-clock assistance. In situations where the child exhibits severe symptoms, such as unconsciousness or convulsions, dialing 911 is imperative.
Proactive Prevention and Education
The cornerstone of preventing poisonings lies in proactive measures and education. Safeguarding hazardous materials by storing them out of reach and sight of children, and securing cabinets with childproof locks, are fundamental steps. Equally important is the education of family members about the dangers of certain substances, emphasizing the importance of not touching or ingesting unknown items. Keeping emergency numbers readily accessible can further bolster a household’s preparedness.
A Collective Responsibility
As we observe Poison Prevention Month, let us renew our commitment to enhancing our safety practices to safeguard our children from the risks of poisoning. Together, we can ensure a safer environment for our children, where their curiosity and exploration are nurtured in a protected and secure setting.

This month, Giggles encourages families to prepare for more time outside, making the most of the spring weather for health and happiness. Here are some delightful ways to get ready for outdoor adventures:
Gear Up for Greenery:
Ensure everyone has the right gear for outdoor activities. Check if the sneakers still fit and if the raincoats are ready for those spring showers.
Sun Safety First:
As we eagerly step into the sunshine, remember to protect your family’s skin. Teach children the importance of applying sunscreen, wearing hats, and choosing the right times to play outside.
Family Fitness Outdoors:
Transform exercise into exploration. Plan family hikes, bike rides, or scavenger hunts in local parks.
Start a Garden Together:
Gardening is a fantastic way to spend time outdoors and learn about healthy foods. Whether it’s a few pots on a balcony or a small garden plot, growing your own vegetables or flowers can be a rewarding experience for children.
Let’s welcome the spring with open arms and ready feet, exploring and learning in the great outdoors.

Food for Thought
Herb Potato Salad
Ingredients
2 pounds small yellow or red potatoes
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 1/2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar or champagne vinegar
6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3 medium green onions, thinly sliced
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint
2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Add the potatoes to a large stockpot and cover with water by 2 inches. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are fork tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Drain then set aside to cool.
2. When the potatoes are cool enough to handle, cut them into bite sized chunks or slice into thin rounds. Add to a large salad bowl.
3. Whisk the mustard, lemon zest, lemon juice, vinegar, and olive oil together until creamy and emulsified. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Pour all but 1/4 cup of the dressing over the potatoes and toss.
4. Add the scallions and fresh herbs. Toss gently, but thoroughly. Serve warm or cover and refrigerate, and then serve the salad cold.
Enjoy!
