Fresh Start for Fall

Helping Children Thrive This Season

As summer winds down and a new school year begins, fall is the perfect time for a fresh start! New routines, new goals, and new opportunities to learn and grow can make this season exciting for the whole family. A consistent morning and bedtime routine can make transitions easier. Try setting regular times for waking up, meals, therapy, school or PPECC activities, playtime, and bedtime. Visual schedules, pictures, and simple reminders can also help children understand what comes next.

A Fresh Season, New Opportunities

As we welcome fall, let's focus on creating routines that support our children's health, development, independence, and happiness. With consistency, encouragement, and a strong support system, every new season can bring opportunities to grow. From all of us at VIVA, we wish your family a happy, healthy, and successful fall! Here's to new routines, new goals, and plenty of little victories this season!

PPECC UPDATE

We are excited to say that our new PPECCs in The Colony as well as in Hurst have started taking patients. We are hiring and accepting new patients. Please spread the word about our amazing PPECC facilities!

PPECCs (Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care Centers) provide skilled nursing care in a safe, nurturing, and developmentally supportive setting during the day. These new centers reflect our continued commitment to expanding access to high-quality pediatric care while giving families more options closer to home.

We can’t wait to welcome new families, build strong care teams, and create spaces where children can receive the medical care they need while still getting to be kids.

National Deaf Awareness Month

September is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Deaf Awareness Month and recognize the diverse ways children communicate, connect, learn, and express themselves. It is also a time to promote understanding, inclusion, and accessibility for children who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

For pediatric healthcare and therapy providers, communication is at the heart of everything we do. Every child deserves to feel heard, understood, and included, whether they communicate through spoken language, sign language, gestures, communication devices, facial expressions, or a combination of different methods.

Tips for Supporting Communication at Home

Here are a few simple ways families can create a more communication-friendly environment:

  • Get your child's attention before speaking or signing. Make sure they know you're communicating with them.
  • Reduce background noise when possible, especially during conversations or activities.
  • Keep your face visible so your child can use visual cues, facial expressions, and lip-reading if they choose to.
  • Use visual supports such as pictures, gestures, schedules, and written words.
  • Encourage all forms of communication. Celebrate attempts to communicate, regardless of the method.
  • Be patient. Give your child plenty of time to process information and respond.
  • Ask what works best. Every child has unique communication preferences and needs.
